TURN OF THE CENTURY LEADER’S CONFERENCE

OBJECTIVE: To understand how various individuals were affected by the industrial revolution and to determine appropriate solutions during the Gilded Age and Progressive Era.

PURPOSE: Analyze why a fluctuating economy assisted or hindered different groups in the late 1800s and identify how competing interests could prevent prosperity for all individuals.

METHOD: The project is broken down into various parts. Each part will be completed for homework or in class. The end result of the project will be a presentation and a group conference at which legislation will be created.

Part 2: Using ABC CLIO (access from LMSD home page, click Libraries, scroll to bottom and find ABC CLIO and click on American History) come to class with typed biographical data. The list should cover childhood up to their current status in the late 1800s- early 1900s.

Part 3: Research the following question: Why are you happy and/or concerned about your current situation and/or the people you represent?

Part 4: Everyone will share their responses to Part 3 as a class. During this session you are required to speak to other classmates and acquire information to be used during our conference. Resultant of this session is the identification of whether each individual could be an ally or a potential enemy in trying to reach an agreement. You should anticipate responses from everyone as you prep for the conference

Part 5: A double-spaced, typed 2-3 page paper (to be used during your presentation) divided into the following sections: (Biography, Why concerned with current situation, your suggested solutions)

Part 6: OPTIONAL(EXTRA CREDIT)- If you would like you can create a tri-fold presentation of your individual. This should largely be a pictorial representation with minimal writing. It should highlight major elements of your historical importance.


PRESENTATION

Day 1- Biographies will be presented as everyone introduces his/herself. If you wish you can dress up as your character. Additionally grievances will be heard from all parties.

Day 2- Teams will form to work on legislation and if time allows you will come back to large group and present proposed legislation.

Day 3- As a group, you will need to complete and present the final proposal. This should involve agreement and disagreement over proposed clauses but ultimately a compromise must be reached.

Paper: 70 points

Participation throughout project and during conference: 30 points

Extra Credit- Tri-fold and dressing up are worth points at my discretion. The better the presentation the more points you can earn.
